Meatballs, tomato sauce and potatoes
What to eat when you have been running errands the whole morning had a class in the afternoon and almost no time to eat? Above all it's Friday and you aren't in the mood for store bought food or pizza.
I had been craving meatballs for quite some time and on my way home I figured that it would be dead easy and quick to make them. As I was trading my way I could clearly see myself dipping rye bread into the tomato sauce and munching on a juicy meatball. But there was another hurdle on the way. Apart from a half full package of tomato sauce the fridge was practically empty. From the first supermarket I picked up a tin of pelate tomatoes and some bread and from the butcher next door minced meat. The cost of the meal, including the flour and garlic that I had already had and the power used, was surprising 200-250 denars ( for a meal for 2-3 people); decent in my opinion but that is not the point of my story.
The meatballs are actually meat water-soaked bread and spices. I don't put onion in my meatballs. Easy peasy. While the pan was getting hot I shaped the meatballs. Then I rolled them in some flour and fried them until golden brown on both sides. If you have a stone lined pan you won't need much oil, and the meatballs will be less greasy. I had inox pan at hands this time. While they were frying I quickly chopped some garlic. When they were done I removed them briefly from the pan tossed in the garlic and the tin of pelate tomatoes chopped the tomatoes there in the pan and let it simmer for about a minute. I put the half done meatballs in the sauce and let the whole thing simmer away for 10-15 minutes.
And then there was a phone call. 'I'm stuck at work on Friday. Any food at home?' At the words of meatballs there was' why don't you throw in some fries?' 'but I don't know how to make fries... '
I put the shoes on and went to our green grocer and bought young potatoes.
I have never known it was so easy to fry potatoes. You just need a lot of oil.
The potatoes turned out as if made in a fast food joint and I was proud of the result. As for the taste I cannot judge. I still don't like potatoes.
