The Bone Church Budweiser and Pilsner Urquell
On the second day the council decided to go where many have gone before and few came back.
After a healthy English breakfast we took the train to Kutna Hora, a small mining town to the east of Prague. Kutna Hora is famous for 3 things. 1. mining and making coins; 2. an amazing Gothic cathedral dedicated to the saint of the miners St Barbara; 3. the Bone Church
We started with the bone church. Mesmerised by the decorations in the church I lost the return ticket. at the very entrance of the church there is a crucifix made of human bones in the middle of the church there is a chandelier made of all the bones in the human body. Needles to say that we spent half an hour identifying the bones on the chandelier :)
Our second stop was the Gothic cathedral. It is very sad to start a building and not see it finished. Reportedly it had taken over two centuries to build the magnificent cathedral and the architect who started the works on the building never saw the final result. The inside of the cathedral is as picturesque as the outside. The icons tell the stories of the local gentry, the stories of the lives of miners, the stories of hardship and repentance. Above all these paintings served as a motivating commercial for the people, telling them that good life can only come through hard work.
The third stop is a local inn. I was surprised to see that this inn served Shopska salad/Balkan salad. As a true Balkan girl I ordered the shopska of course, and for a split second I hesitated between the slivovica or Budweiser. The beer won. Budweiser, the perfection of beer. All ingredients in perfect harmony. It is not as bitter as the Gambrinus nor as sweet as Staropramen. It is tasty and balanced.
After the beer we take the train back to Prague. The beer works its way and I doze off on the longer way back to Prague. A quick shower and off on a night-time sightseeing and another beer. This time we go for Pilsner Urquell. What is a bit weird in Czech cafes is that there isn't any music playing, perhaps because the beer is enough. The beer itself is very refreshing, watery and neither bitter nor sweet.
"What a great time we had" thought Radovan.....
